Long ago, when the Earth was still young, heavy sheets of water fell from above and mammoth waves tumbled upon the world with incredible force and created the great hills and creviced of today. Lakes flooded, mountains rose from the deepest depths, and Eylan sparkled it’s way out from under the soil. Tall grasses shimmered and trees swayed their branches, all burdened with green. Creation had finished. All was perfect, except one important element-- creatures to fill the marvelous world. For a long time, the lands of Eylan were solemn and quiet, the only noises being the whistling grass and an occasional whisper between trees. On a warm summer afternoon, a flutter of insect wings reached the tip-top leaves of the tallest tree. A fever of excitement traveled from one knotted branch down to the next, spiraling down the twisted grooves of the trunk, and into the spider web of roots. The fever spread through the ground, as rings do on the surface of a pond. The forest floor grew warm and the ripples spread to the surrounding trees and plants, illuminating the petals of every flower in Eylan. These radiant beacons drew the insects to the land, sealing them into the new world. Several more outbreaks of this excitement fever occurred soon after at the arrival of the avian inhabitants, the water creatures, the reptiles, and finally the equines, among other mammals.
These first horses were the Sythes. They enforced laws, chose leaders and gods, and passed time blessing an cursing the mortals as they pleased. Delirium overtook them as their authority began to be challenged. They secluded themselves to the barren edges of the world, never to enter the world of the living.
Some equine wanted the now self-governing herd to follow their heart, and wanted their herd to function on selflessness, to create an environment of loving kindness among one another. Some followed their mind, choosing to ignore emotions, and act without morals or ethics, but to work to serve themselves. Lastly, there were those who followed their soul, choosing not to worry about an organized idea, but wanted to make decisions in the heat of the moment. Of course, nobody would let go of their beliefs, and the gigantic herd split into the three groups, the light alliance of Heart, the dark alliance of Mind, and the neutral alliance of Soul. Some members left completely to get away from the battle, traveling far distances as years passed.
The story of the Sythes has since been considered a myth, as little evidence of their existence is still standing. A few ruins, a few stories, but that’s it. Occasionally, you may find someone who believes that they still return to possess the bodies of the innocent, but they likely won’t admit it. Most simply believe that the mystery will never be solved, but the creation tale is almost as thrilling to foals as the beauty of Eylan is intoxicating to the inexperienced creature.
Enter Eylan and see it for yourself. You won’t believe your eyes.
